Get Things Done
How to Finish What You Start
By Marlene Wagner
Do you often struggle to finish projects you start, even when you have every intention of finishing them? You’re a master at making excuses.
You have a reason for every occasion when asked why you haven’t acted on a goal.
Believe it or not, this is a common problem that many people face. And I speak of myself here as well.
Luckily, you can follow a few steps to ensure that you can become the type of person who finishes a project once you start it.
Stop Making Excuses and Finish What You Start
Those big goals have waited long enough. Today is the day your life changes!
Keep reading to learn some effective techniques designed to get your life back on track in no time.
Be You and Step into the Unknown
If you think you can’t because someone else has already done it better, think again.
Regardless of who you’re comparing yourself to, no one will tackle a problem in the same way you will.
Don’t hold back, instead, relax and jump into action your way. See where being you can take you.
Sometimes you just have to find your hidden adventurer. Indulge your curiosity and try something new to find out what happens.
I can’t help but think of the time I decided to write a book. The only thing I knew about writing a book was that I knew I had a book in my head.
I researched how to do this, and then I just jumped in. In nine months, I launched and thirty days later achieved Best Seller status on Amazon.
If you’ve done your research, you probably already have a pretty good idea of just what is going to happen.
You, too, could experience the surprise of a lifetime, as I did with the success of my book.
Take Responsibility
Feeling trapped in a cycle of inaction because someone else is holding you back is just another excuse and version of the blame game.
Really, the one holding you back when you make these statements is you. You’re where you are because you put yourself there.
The key is to start making choices that move you forward from this spot.
Make A Written Plan
The first step to completing a task is to ensure you have a plan in place from the beginning.
It needs to be a plan that you write down. I can’t stress this enough. A mental note isn’t worth the piece of paper it’s written on.
Every project or goal I’ve ever had never took hold until I created a well-thought-out written plan.
You may want to jump in and start something in your excitement, but you might not realize all the work and challenges you will face.
When you take the time to plan, it will better prepare you for the task at hand, and you’ll be able to spot problems much more easily.
Make Small Goals and Rewards for Yourself
As you plan how to conquer your task or project, break your goal into smaller mini-goals. Then, cross them off and reward yourself as you complete them.
It will help keep you on task, and you’ll be able to feel as if you are making progress, even if it’s small.
This progress will do wonders to keep your spirits high while working on the project. The little rewards you are giving yourself will probably help too.
Take A Break and Focus on the Positive
If you find yourself becoming overly frustrated or starting to dislike the project because you’ve been working on it for a long time, it’s okay to take a short break.
It’s too easy to quit because you see all the ways you’re not good enough.
This short break will help reset your mind and focus on your talents and abilities.
You might even be able to solve some of the problems you are facing while you take this little breather.
What can you learn to do better? What can you learn to push yourself forward?
By seeing what’s possible, you’ll shift your thinking to someone more ready to act than hold back.
Just make sure to set a clear endpoint for your break, so you hold yourself to it and don’t abandon the project.
Conclusion
The next time you get excited about a new project or goal in your life, take a moment to slow down and create a plan.
To complete your plan, include smaller goals and rewards for yourself.
As you pursue the project, don’t be afraid to take small breaks if you need to recuperate.
Chances are, thanks to these steps, you’ll be much more likely to finish your new goal than leave it abandoned.
Ultimately, you must act. Making excuses about being tired or not having time won’t suffice.
If something is important to you, fatigue doesn’t matter. You’ll make the time. The key is to take the next step.
The following steps will come much easier once you’re already in motion.
By using these techniques, you’ll find you no longer need excuses. In fact, you’re probably feeling kind of eager to get to work.
This is a good thing! So dust off those Big Goals, because good things are about to happen!
