Redefining Success

Letting Go of Unrealistic Expectations

By Marlene Wagner

In your life’s journey, you may find yourself burdened occasionally by unrealistic expectations. Your peers, society, or you may impose them on you.

They create heavy clouds overhead and dim the brightness of your experiences, leaving you feeling inadequate.

What if you let go of those burdens?

Can you embrace your reality as imperfect but still beautiful in a certain way?

It can ultimately lead to success.

Letting go of unrealistic expectations is both a process and an art, not a one-time event.

It will require you to be patient, self-aware, and willing to redefine your success on your own terms.

We all have one or more projects or interests we want to learn or be better at doing.

For some, it may be to make that perfect pie crust. For another, it may be to start a new business, write a book, or learn how to refurbish old furniture.

What is it for you? Keep your aspirations in mind as you continue to read.

Common Characteristics of Unrealistic Expectations of Success

Expecting immediate results. Believing meaningful success should happen quickly, with little time for growth or development.

Demanding perfection. Viewing mistakes, setbacks, or imperfect outcomes as signs of failure.

Understanding the effort required. Expecting major achievements without sustained work, discipline, or sacrifice.

Comparing yourself to others. Measuring success against other people’s achievements without sustained work, discipline, or sacrifice.

Expecting constant progress. Assuming success should follow a steady upward path without setbacks, plateaus, or detours.

Believing success will solve everything. Expecting achievement, money, recognition, or status to automatically create lasting happiness and fulfillment.

Focusing only on the result. Overlooking the learning, patience, and small wins that are part of achieving success.

Expecting success without failure. Believing successful people rarely experience rejection, mistakes, disappointment, or failed attempts.

Setting goals beyond your current resources. Expecting outcomes that don’t realistically match your available time, skills, finances, energy, or support.

Do any of these resonate with you?

Benefits of Letting Go of Unrealistic Expectations

If you are feeling frustrated, disappointed, or overwhelmed with your work or your life, you may be letting unrealistic expectations drag you down.

It may be difficult to let go of the way you think your work or life should look, but you need to accept it as is.

It will help you find a balance and live a more successful life.

Included are the benefits of letting go of unrealistic expectations

Less stress. Striving for things beyond your reach is stressful. You’ll feel less stressed if you let go of unrealistic expectations.

More balance. If you constantly choose impossible ideals, you will always feel like you are lacking. Accept your work and life for what they are, and you’ll find you have a healthy balance.

Greater satisfaction. When you let go of unrealistic expectations, you may feel more satisfaction in your work and home life. You will be proud of your accomplishments, rather than feeling that whatever you do is not enough.

More enjoyment. After you stop expecting perfection, you may find that you’ll enjoy your life more. You can achieve success without the bad parts of life blindsiding you.

Makes setbacks easier to handle. Allows you to see mistakes and challenges as a natural part of growth rather than proof of failure.

Creates more sustainable success. Encourages realistic goals, steady progress, and healthier habits that can lead to lasting achievement.

How You Can Let Unrealistic Expectations Go to Redefine Your Success

Consider where you are in life, and what you still want to accomplish. Reflect on yourself and see if the goals you have set are reasonable and attainable. Manage your expectations to avoid disappointment.

Manage what you expect of others. Expecting more than is reasonable from others can be a problem at work and at home. If you’re expecting too much from others, it will seem like they always let you down, so you won’t be able to make long-lasting, healthy connections.

Remind yourself that no one can be perfect. This helps you adjust your expectations of collaborators and lets you let go of grudges and forgive.

Practice thankfulness. Practicing gratitude helps you appreciate the people and successes in your life, instead of always striving for perfection. Make time to appreciate people, progress, and success and remain positive.

Allow yourself to establish a backup plan. This is helpful when you set goals, giving you more control. There is nothing wrong with having a Plan B. This is as true in personal life as it is in professional life.

Conclusion

It’s human nature to have expectations of yourself and of others. Many of these are reasonable and realistic.

You expect a regular payday at your job, since it is in your contract. Unrealistic expectations, however, can make it harder to identify success.

Letting go of unrealistic expectations isn’t easy.

Keep in mind your thoughts, wants, and beliefs, as these will keep your expectations more in check.

It won’t allow you to be flooded with negative thoughts or disappointment when things don’t work out just the way you think they should.

Acknowledge any displeasure you feel and let go of unrealistic expectations. Move forward without letting them stand between you and success.
