The Power of Gratitude
How to Use Gratitude for Personal Growth
By Marlene Wagner
When you appreciate what you have in life, you will be happier.
Feeling grateful for the big things in life, we must remember to feel grateful and find joy in the smaller parts of life.
When you feel gratitude, it becomes easier to handle setbacks and obstacles.
Gratitude allows you to perceive what’s good about your life, instead of concentrating on what may be bad.
Feeling gratitude allows you to value loved ones more, deepening your relationships. It allows you to move forward, rather than worrying about the past.
Here are some simple ways to use powerful gratitude for personal growth.
Include Gratitude in Each Day
Including gratitude in your daily routine is important if you want to experience its power to transform your life.
Thankfulness can become second nature only if you make a conscious effort to feel it repeatedly.
Throughout each day, you can cultivate new gratitude through observing mindful moments.
Instead of rushing through the day, pause consciously and savor the present, whether that means warm morning coffee, beauty in nature, or time spent with people you love.
Keep a Gratitude Journal
Gratitude journals involve jotting down several things for which you are thankful. You can do it every day or once a week, whatever works best for you.
It’s an excellent first step toward fully experiencing gratitude. It helps you identify and reflect on people, events, or things for which you are thankful.
A 2021 study in BMC Psychology examined the positive effects of completing a gratitude journal among college students.
They found that such journals also influence goal-directed behavior favorably.
In that study, 84 university students were divided into a gratitude group and a control (neutral) group.
The gratitude group was asked to list things they felt grateful for over two weeks. The control group only conducted daily self-evaluations.
It was no surprise that the gratitude group showed notable improvements in their academic motivation and potential for personal growth.
Identify New Possibilities in Your Life
When you decide on something you want to do with your life, you may start by doing online searches.
You look for information about your choices, what you should focus on, and more.
You may find so much information that you feel the niche you wanted to fill is already full.
However, when you reflect on your passions and what led you to choose this career or opportunity, you will realize that what you contribute is worth the time you invest.
You can move beyond what other people have done and identify new possibilities.
Appreciate the Natural World
Look out your window or head outside and find the beautiful things to appreciate. The beauty of nature will never disappoint.
Be open to all that’s around you and appreciate it. The sun reflecting off a bright surface. Leaves blowing in the wind.
Observe the animals, wild or domestic, living in nature. A beautiful sunset on a warm summer evening.
It’s a wonderful way to revitalize yourself and leave the stresses of the day.
These short moments spent appreciating things around you will help in your quest for personal growth.
Write Notes of Gratitude to Others
You can build positive relationships at home or at work by writing notes of gratitude to the people who share your life.
You can thank them for the treasured memories of your relationship.
Include interactions and lighthearted moments that they may well have forgotten.
Thank them for the positive effects they have had on your life.
The letters can be delivered in person, emailed, or sent via snail mail.
You can even send a text message or read letters to the recipients if you’re comfortable doing so.
Conclusion
Gratitude plays a vital role in your personal growth. It will encourage you to self-reflect and understand yourself and others more deeply.
When you practice gratitude, you become more fully aware of the kindness and support you receive.
It leads to closer relationships and a vibrant sense of community.
Find a way that works for you to develop a daily habit of practicing gratitude.
